How does plasma cleaning work
Ultraviolet light produced in plasmas is very effective at breaking most organic bonds in surface pollutants. This helps break down the oil. A second cleaning is carried out by high-energy oxygen produced in the plasma. These substances react with organic pollutants, mainly water and carbon dioxide, which are continuously removed (pumped out) from the chamber during the processing.
If the part to be plasma-cleaned consists of a readily oxidizable material (such as silver or copper), an inert gas (such as argon or helium) is used instead. Plasma-activated atoms and ions act like molecular sandblasts, breaking down organic pollutants. During treatment, these contaminants evaporate again and are discharged from the chamber.
