Carbon steel used in vacuum technology requires no pressure to be created and maintained and no corrosion protection as long as the pressure is below 10-5hPa. Compared with stainless steel, it is a relatively low-cost building material, has good weldability, and easy to process. However, when using this type of steel, consideration must be given to the continuous venting of CO and the tendency to be eroded by air. On the atmospheric side, corrosion protection can be provided by painting, while on the vacuum side, this can be provided by nickel plating. For the manufacture of containers, careful selection of steel must be made, especially for weldability and air tightness. Boiler manufacturing methods can only be transferred to vacuum vessel manufacturing to a limited extent. When dimensioning, the stress caused by external air pressure must be taken into account and the welding must ensure a vacuum seal. In addition, the tools used must be strictly separated from the tools used in the processing of stainless steel, in order to avoid contamination of stainless steel. This also applies to storing and transporting mild steel and stainless steel. Mild steel is commonly used in flanged fasteners, the surfaces of which are often galvanized, nickel-plated or chrome-plated to protect them from corrosion.
